In a robust move to combat noise and air pollution from motorcycles, the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) seized and dismantled 11,000 pressure horns and modified silencers on Friday. These items were crushed under a bulldozer in a bid to curb the city's pollution levels.

Special Drive Targets Illegal Modifications

Between May 21 and June 11, the MTP conducted a special drive resulting in the seizure of these horns and silencers, primarily from Bullet motorcycles. During this period, a total of 11,636 two-wheeler owners were penalised for illegally installing pressure horns and modified silencers on their vehicles. The traffic police emphasised that the next phase of this drive would involve taking action against the sellers and manufacturers of these units.

Penalties and Regulations

Data from the drive shows that 2,005 vehicles were caught using modified silencers, while 8,268 vehicles were found with pressure horns, which produce excessively loud noises. Offenders were penalised under section 194 (F) of the Motor Vehicles Act, which pertains to the use of horns in silence zones, and section 119 (2) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, which addresses vehicles fitted with multi-tone horns emitting harsh, shrill, or alarming noises.

Impact on Road Safety and Public Health

Reports indicate that the use of pressure horns while driving distracts other road users, leading to potentially fatal accidents. The sudden sound from these horns can startle drivers, causing collisions and unexpected accidents. Additionally, modified silencers have been found to cause health issues for people living nearby, particularly affecting children and the elderly.
