New Delhi: A 38-year-old man was arrested by Virar police for allegedly stabbing his wife to death on suspicion of an extramarital affair. The tragic incident occurred on Friday, September 13, when the accused, Gopal Rathod, fatally stabbed his wife, Bharti, multiple times, leading to her death.

Victim found with multiple stab wounds

The Virar police were alerted by residents of the Maharashtra's Ekvira building, where the couple lived, after hearing loud disturbances and screams from their flat. Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered Bharti’s body with multiple stab wounds on her chest and stomach. A bloodied kitchen knife was found beside her. Bharti's body was immediately sent for post-mortem to determine the extent of her injuries, while the police launched an investigation into the brutal murder.

Accused confesses to murder

After the discovery of Bharti’s body, the police registered a murder case and began searching for Gopal Rathod, who had fled the scene. Using his mobile phone location, police tracked him down in Kalyan the following day and arrested him. During interrogation, Rathod confessed to killing his wife, citing suspicion of an affair as his motive.

Suspicion fueled by alcoholism

Rathod admitted to the police that he returned home on the day of the murder and found Bharti speaking on the phone. Drunk and consumed by suspicion, he assumed she was having an affair and began assaulting her. When Bharti attempted to defend herself, Rathod, in a fit of rage, grabbed a kitchen knife and repeatedly stabbed her until she collapsed.

Troubled marriage marred by abuse

The investigation revealed that Rathod was a habitual drinker who frequently abused his wife, both verbally and physically, after consuming alcohol. Neighbors confirmed that the couple had frequent fights, often triggered by Rathod's drinking habits. Bharti had reportedly pleaded with her husband to stop drinking, but her requests only fueled his anger further.

Following his arrest, Gopal Rathod was presented before the magistrate court, which remanded him to police custody as the investigation continues.
