Mukhtar Ansari, who is already serving a ten-year jail term in a different kidnapping and murder case, has been convicted in a 1991 murder case on June 5, 2023. As per the sources, Varanasi MP MLA court (the court of special judge Avanish Gautam) concluded the hearing on May 19 and announced the decision today. Besides Ansari, four others have been declared guilty.Mukhtar Ansari is a five-time MLA and was brought into limelight when he was charged with murdering a Congress leader, Awadhesh Rai in 1991. Besides being a prominent Congress leader himself, Awadesh is brother of former MLA Ajay Rai. Awadhesh was reportedly shot dead outside Ajays house in Varanasi. Afterwards, Ajay had named Mukhtar Ansari, Bhim Singh and another former MLA Abdul Kalim in the FIR. It should be noted that Mukhtar Ansari has been involved in many criminal cases in the past as well.
