Health ministry to begin screening for mpox (X)

New Delhi: The health ministry has issued an advisory to states regarding the mpox virus, recommending that they screen suspects and trace contacts to prevent the spread of the disease. The advisory emphasizes the importance of identifying individuals who may have been exposed to the virus and tracking their contacts to ensure timely intervention and containment of the outbreak. By doing so, states can effectively monitor and manage the spread of mpox, reducing the risk of further transmission and protecting public health.

NCDC unveils comprehensive mpox surveillance strategy

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has issued a comprehensive surveillance strategy to states, outlining key measures to combat the mpox virus. This includes:

  •  A designated list of laboratories where testing can be conducted
  • A clinical management protocol for treating suspected cases
  •  Communication strategies to prevent and control the spread of infection

Ministry stresses importance of mpox preparedness

Senior officials will conduct a thorough review of public health preparedness at health facilities across states and districts to ensure readiness. Hospitals must identify and prepare isolation facilities to care for both suspected and confirmed mpox cases. These facilities should have trained staff to manage cases effectively.

The ministry emphasizes the importance of disease surveillance units under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) in tracking contacts and containing the spread of mpox. States must prioritize educating healthcare workers, particularly those in skin and STD clinics, on recognizing common signs and symptoms of mpox and taking appropriate actions post-diagnosis to prevent further transmission.

NACO identified sites to enhance mpox screening and testing

All individuals suspected of having mpox in the community will undergo screening and testing, encompassing both hospital-based surveillance and targeted intervention sites identified by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). This comprehensive approach ensures that potential cases are identified and addressed promptly, regardless of whether they are found in healthcare settings or through community-based outreach efforts.

Advisory's guiding principle

The advisory emphasizes the importance of awareness and caution, stating: "While all states are requested to undertake appropriate activities to make communities aware about the disease, its mode of spread, need for timely reporting and preventive measures, it is crucial that any undue panic amongst the masses is prevented."

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra has issued the advisory to states and union territories in view of the World Health Organization's declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern related to mpox.
