National News: Amritpal Singh, an MP from Khadur Sahib and the head of the 'Waris Punjab De' organization, is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam, but his popularity and influence in Punjab politics seems to be constantly increasing. Now the political stir has intensified due to his declaration of the face of the next Chief Minister of Punjab.
In a conference held at Talwandi Sabo on the occasion of Baisakhi on Sunday, 'Shiromani Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De)' declared Amritpal Singh as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2027 assembly elections. This announcement was made by Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, MP from Faridkot. Khalsa has strongly appealed to the party workers to prepare for the 2027 elections from now and convey the views of MP Amritpal Singh to the people of Punjab for the next one and a half years.
In 2023, Punjab Police arrested Amritpal Singh on charges of attacking a police station near Amritsar. Strict security sections were imposed against him and then he was sent to Jail in Assam after taking transit remand from a court in Dibrugarh.
What is the party's strategy?
According to sources, Amritpal Singh has a deep hold among the youth and staunch supporters. The party is considering him as a strong alternative political face and has started preparations ahead of time for the 2027 elections. However, there are still many questions about his legal status and release.
Papalpreet Singh, a close associate of Amritpal Singh, was produced in the Ajnala court on Friday from where he was sent on four days police remand. He was arrested in 2023 on charges of an attack at Ajnala police station. The Punjab Police reached Dibrugarh Jail in Assam on 9 April, where Papalpreet was released after one year of detention under the National Security Act (NSA). Soon after his release, he was taken into custody and brought to Amritsar and was arrested again in the old case.
