Madhya Pradesh News: In Harda district of Madhya Pradesh, a man accused of raping a five-year-old girl consumed poison just before being arrested after a six-day manhunt. The accused, Sunil Korku, was apprehended by the police on Sunday morning. He is now in critical condition and has been transferred to a hospital in Bhopal for treatment.

How did it happen?

On September 23, Sunil Korku, 22, lured the young girl from Chhipabad village under the pretense of giving her a snack. He took the child to the bank of a nearby river, where the crime took place. When the girl didn’t return home, her family started searching for her. Villagers revealed that Sunil had been seen with the girl, leading her family to the riverbank where they found the child in distress, crying, and severely injured. The girl was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Sunil fled the scene immediately after the incident, prompting the police to launch a massive search operation. The district police, aided by drones equipped with night vision and thermal sensors, scoured dense forest areas but struggled to locate him for several days. Six police stations and around 200 personnel were involved in the operation. The police eventually received information on Saturday night that Sunil was hiding in the Rahatgaon area. The search continued into the early hours of Sunday, and he was found in a field in Nazarpura village. When the police approached him, Sunil attempted to flee and consumed poison out of fear of being caught.

Condition of the victim

The young victim remains in the hospital, where she is receiving continuous treatment. According to her grandmother, the child is still in considerable pain. "She screams in pain, and her condition is not improving as fast as we had hoped," the grandmother said. However, doctors have reported that the girl's health is gradually stabilizing, and she may be discharged soon.

Who is accused?

Sunil Korku, the son of Jaynarayan Korku, is originally from Khari Timarni village in Khandwa district. He had been staying at his maternal uncle’s house in Chhipabad, which is located opposite the victim’s residence. He had only been in the village for about eight days before committing the crime.

Following the incident, the community was outraged, and the police placed a reward of Rs 10,000 for information leading to the accused’s arrest. The victim's family, particularly her father, expressed gratitude toward the police for finally capturing the suspect but demanded that Sunil be given the death penalty. The case has reignited calls for stricter penalties for sexual offenses against children.
