The monsoon, heralding relief from sweltering temperatures, has embarked on its journey from Kerala to Maharashtra, bringing respite to parched lands. Anticipation mounts in the northern states as they eagerly await the monsoon's arrival, yet pre-monsoon showers in select regions have already bestowed relief from the oppressive heat. Recent weeks saw communities in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand grappling with severe heatwaves, compelling many to retreat indoors during daylight hours. However, as temperatures ease, signs of life reemerge on the streets, signaling a reprieve from the stifling heat.

Dust storm in Delhi-NCR

The weather forecast for Delhi-NCR, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), hints at the possibility of storms accompanied by dust on June 8, with scattered pre-monsoon showers likely in certain areas. The ensuing week promises a shift in weather dynamics, with a return to warm and sultry conditions. Furthermore, the mercury could soar to 44 to 45 degrees Celsius or higher, potentially reigniting heatwave conditions in the national capital.

IMD forecasts thunderstorms

IMD forecasts the likelihood of thunderstorms and rainfall in parts of North-West India over the next two days, while hot winds may sweep through Eastern India, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh for the subsequent five days. Coastal Maharashtra and North Karnataka brace for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days, according to IMD advisories.

Rajasthan can experience rain

Radheshyam Sharma, Director of the Meteorological Department in Jaipur, Rajasthan, anticipates light rain and sporadic hailstorms in select areas of western Rajasthan, including Jodhpur, Bikaner, Ajmer, Jaipur, and Bharatpur, within the next 48 hours. Eastern Rajasthan may witness dust storms, with thunderstorms likely in parts of North Rajasthan on June 8, offering relief from the oppressive heat. Heatwave conditions are expected to subside for the subsequent four to five days.

In terms of monsoon progression, meteorological authorities indicate rapid advancement. The southwest monsoon is poised to traverse Chhattisgarh via Bastar by June 8, with Raipur anticipated to welcome its onset by June 11. Uttar Pradesh braces for the monsoon's arrival between June 18 and 20, with Gorakhpur or Varanasi earmarked as potential entry points. Similarly, Delhi could witness the onset of monsoon by June 27, marking a significant meteorological event.
