New Delhi: Southwest monsoon has arrived in Kerala, marking the official start of the rainy season in India. This year, the monsoon arrived two days earlier than its usual June 1st date, bringing relief from the scorching summer heat.

Early monsoon hits northeast too

The good news extends beyond Kerala. The monsoon has also advanced into most parts of northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Assam. This early arrival promises much-needed rain for these regions.

When will Mumbai and Delhi see monsoon?

While Kerala and the northeast celebrate the early showers, other parts of India patiently await their turn. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai can expect the monsoon to arrive by June 11. Delhi, the nation's capital, will likely see the monsoon rains towards the end of June.

Cyclone Remal may have influenced early arrival?

Weather scientists believe Cyclone Remal, which made landfall on the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts on May 26, may have played a role in the monsoon's early arrival. The cyclone might have pulled the monsoonal flow towards the Bay of Bengal, accelerating its movement.

Kerala braces for heavy rainfall

Kerala has already been experiencing heavy rains in the past few days, leading to an excess of rainfall in May. With the official monsoon onset, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for all districts in the state, anticipating further downpours. Residents in Kochi and other flood-prone areas should exercise caution.

Above-normal rainfall expected this monsoon season

The IMD's forecast offers promising news for the entire monsoon season (June to September). The country is expected to experience above-normal rainfall across central India and the southern peninsula. While northwest India might see normal rainfall, the northeast could receive below-normal amounts.
