New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a rally in Maharashtra’s Amravati, hinting at alleged memory lapses in Modi’s speeches. Drawing a parallel with US President Joe Biden, who is often criticized for his verbal missteps, Gandhi recalled an incident where Biden mistakenly introduced Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Speaking at the rally, Gandhi said, “My sister told me she heard Modi Ji’s speech, and in that speech, whatever we say, Modi Ji is repeating the same. I don’t know, maybe he has lost his memory. Similarly, Biden had to be reminded of names, and Modi Ji appears to be facing the same issue.”

Accusations of Reversing Blame

Rahul Gandhi also alleged that the Prime Minister was echoing the Congress’s long-standing stance on constitutional matters. “For the past year, I’ve been highlighting BJP’s attack on the Constitution. Now, Modi Ji is saying that Congress is attacking it. He seems to be reversing the narrative as people are noticing BJP’s actions,” Gandhi stated. He further added, “I said in Lok Sabha that Congress and the INDIA bloc will abolish the 50% reservation cap. Yet, Modi Ji is now accusing me of being against reservation.”

Continuing his campaign for a caste-based census, Gandhi reiterated his demand, urging the Modi government to conduct the nationwide exercise. “The country needs to know how many Dalits, Adivasis, and OBCs are there. But soon, Modi Ji will claim I oppose the caste census too,” he remarked.

Maharashtra Assembly Polls in Focus

The Congress, part of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), aims to strengthen its foothold in Maharashtra, especially after its strong performance in the Lok Sabha polls. With the state set to vote in a single phase on November 20 for its 288 Assembly seats, the party is looking to unseat the ruling Mahayuti alliance comprising BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and Ajit Pawar’s NCP.
