In a tragic incident, a woman committed suicide after she was humiliated by a kangaroo court over illicit relationships with a man in West Bengal. According to the sources, the woman was beaten by local people outside her residence and panchayat members witnessed the whole episode. However, the panchayat members called trial necessary as the victim lacked morality, according to them.

Police have arrested four people in connection with the case from Jalpaiguri.

What exactly happened?

The incident came to light when the married woman allegedly ran away with a man almost eight days ago. Following which, her husband alerted the panchayat and forwarded the missing complaint, asking the local men to trace the duo.
When the woman returned on Monday, she was beaten and abused by local women outside her residence. Her husband was also assaulted when he tried to intervene.

Unable to bear the humiliation, feeling criticised and embarrassed, the woman ran away from her home and consumed an acid-like substance. Soon after getting the information, she was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

As per media reports, the victim’s husband has claimed that he also reported the event to TMC leader Malati Roy and her husband Shankar Roy, and they called them for a meeting, but when they arrived the goons of Roy attacked both of them. However, the TMC leader has denied the allegations, asserting they did not hold a Kangaroo Court.

Another case of mob flogging

Meanwhile, it is important to note that this is not the first time something like this has happened. Another video of striking a couple with a bamboo was widely circulated on social media showing TMC leader, Tajmul, alias 'JCB,' from the Chopra region which was criticised by people.

Soon after the complaint, Tajmul was taken into custody and is currently being charged on multiple counts, including attempted murder, assault with the purpose to cause a woman's modesty to be offended, and willfully causing great harm.
