New Delhi: A heartwarming video has captured the internet's attention as a foreign student, Maurie, showcased her fluent Punjabi while ordering tea at a local shop. The clip, which has gone viral, begins with Maurie approaching the counter and greeting the female staff, asking for a cup of tea in perfect Punjabi.
Despite the warm weather at 27°C, Maurie’s craving for chai led her to the tea shop. Upon reaching the counter, she chose to converse in the local language rather than English or any other language. Describing herself as a chai lover, she humorously remarked, "It's like 27 degrees outside right now, so there's no reason for me to drink chai. But mennu chai chahdiya tar mi ki kara (what can I do if I want chai?)."
Maurie initially greeted the staff with a simple "Hello," to which the staff responded politely. Moments later, Maurie asked if they understood Punjabi, and upon receiving confirmation, she seamlessly switched languages. "Mein ithho chai kardeed sakthiya?" she inquired, asking if she could get some chai. The staff, taken aback by her fluency, couldn’t help but ask how she learned the language. Maurie explained, "I used to take Punjabi lessons at the University (of Toronto, Canada). There was a class for learning Punjabi." The staff praised her, saying, "Very nice Punjabi."
The video has sparked admiration online, with netizens lauding Maurie’s impressive language skills. Many compared her fluency to that of native speakers, with one commenter noting, "She speaks Punjabi better than Punjabis living in Delhi... Her accent is on an extreme level."
