Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been spotted near Sohra and Shella in the state’s East Khasi Hills district close to the India-Bangladesh border; the Meghalaya police reported to the BSF. The UAVs' presence has prompted heightened vigilance from Indian security agencies, including the Indian Air Force (IAF), which is closely monitoring the situation along the 443 km stretch of the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya.

Security implications and responses

Meghalaya's Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, confirmed that both the BSF and IAF have been informed about the sightings. One specific UAV, identified by its transponder code TB2R1071, was reportedly operated from Tejgaon Airbase in Bangladesh. A senior BSF official indicated that this UAV deployment might be an attempt by Bangladesh to project strength domestically during a time of instability.

The Bayraktar TB2 drones are developed by Turkey's Baykar. They are known for their advanced surveillance and precision strike capabilities. With an operational range of 300 km and an endurance of up to 27 hours, these UAVs are part of Bangladesh's military enhancement efforts.

Regional security measures

Indian authorities are taking these developments seriously, implementing that enhanced surveillance measures and intelligence is taking place sharing along the border. The situation highlights the evolving security challenges in the region. The tensions between India and Bangladesh, however, continue to escalate.
