New Delhi: Tinkesh Kaushik, a 30-year-old from Goa, has made history as the first triple amputee to reach the Mount Everest Base Camp. According to a private disability rights organization, Kaushik reached the Base Camp, situated at 17,598 feet above sea level, on May 11.
Despite losing both legs below the knees and one hand at the age of nine due to an electrocution accident in Haryana, Kaushik's determination and mental strength propelled him to accomplish this remarkable journey. Since moving to Goa a few years ago, he has been working as a fitness coach.
Using prosthetic limbs, Kaushik's achievement has not only brought pride to Goa but has also inspired the entire nation. Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) chief Avelino D’Souza lauded Kaushik's incredible accomplishment during a press conference in Panaji on Wednesday.
Though Kaushik is a fitness coach, he encountered significant challenges while trekking to the base camp of the world's tallest mountain. Initially, he believed his fitness level would make the trek easier, but the reality proved otherwise.
“I did not have any prior experience in mountaineering. I prepared for that before going for the base camp. I am a fitness coach by profession and thought it will be an easy trek for me,” Kaushik shared. He admitted that the first day of trekking was particularly painful due to his prosthetic limbs and the level of his amputation.
“Trekking proved to be challenging. On the second day, I decided that I have to do it. It’s a doable trek. In between, my health was bad, and I suffered from acute mountain sickness,” he added.
Kaushik attributed his success to his mental strength, proving that with determination and resilience, even the most daunting challenges can be conquered.
