Bengaluru police have arrested a seasoned thief who has been carrying out burglaries across multiple states for nearly two decades. The accused, identified as 37-year-old Panchakshari S Swami, originally from Solapur, Maharashtra, has a long criminal record and a lavish lifestyle that has shocked investigators.
According to Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, Swami was arrested in connection with a burglary that took place on January 9 in Maruti Nagar, Bengaluru. He allegedly stole gold and silver jewelry worth ₹14 lakh from a residence. The police meticulously examined footage from over 200 CCTV cameras, which eventually led to his identification. During the arrest, authorities recovered 181 grams of gold biscuits, 33 grams of silver ornaments, and a firearm from his possession.
Swami began his criminal activities in 2003 as a minor. By 2009, he had become a professional burglar, amassing wealth worth crores. Investigators revealed that between 2014-15, he was involved in a relationship with an actress and spent extravagantly on her. He also built a ₹3 crore home in Kolkata and gifted a ₹22 lakh aquarium.
In 2016, Gujarat police arrested Swami, leading to his six-year imprisonment at Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Central Jail. After his release, he resumed his criminal activities, resulting in another arrest by Maharashtra police in 2024. Following his release, he moved to Bengaluru and continued his notorious ways. Authorities confirmed that he also has an outstanding case in Belagavi.
Investigators disclosed that Swami had a penchant for women and spent heavily on them. Despite being married with a child, he reportedly gifted his Kolkata girlfriend a ₹3 crore house. Swami typically worked alone, identifying unoccupied homes to target. He is also a black belt in karate and has had alleged connections with multiple actresses. To evade arrest, he frequently changed his appearance after committing crimes.
Sources indicate that after his father’s demise, Swami’s mother secured a railway job. He purchased a house in her name, but due to unpaid loans, the bank has issued an auction notice for the property.
Swami’s arrest marks a significant breakthrough for Bengaluru police, and authorities have vowed to crack down on repeat offenders who exploit legal loopholes to resume criminal activities.
