New Delhi: Major Sita Ashok Shelke, the sole woman officer among 70 male officers from the Army's Madras Engineering Group in Bengaluru, has become a symbol of determination and excellence. A striking image of Major Shelke standing on the newly constructed Bailey Bridge in Chooralmala, Wayanad—a region ravaged by landslides—has captured widespread attention online. The photo, showcasing her dedication amidst disaster, has been met with an outpouring of praise for both her and the Indian Army's commitment to service.
Under Major Shelke’s leadership, the Madras Engineer Group (MEG) and Centre overcame immense challenges, including piles of debris, uprooted trees, and a heavily flowing river, to complete the bridge in just 31 hours. Known as the 'Madras Sappers,' this engineering unit is responsible for clearing paths for the Army, constructing bridges, and tasks such as defusing landmines in wartime. The unit also plays a crucial role in disaster relief operations, notably during Kerala's 2018 floods.
Major Shelke emphasizes that the bridge's construction was not solely the Army's triumph. "I must convey my thanks to all the local authorities, state officials, and everyone who has helped us from different places. Special thanks to the locals, villagers, and state officials," she told PTI. Her gratitude highlights the essential cooperation between the Army and local communities in overcoming adversity.
Despite facing significant challenges like heavy rainfall and limited construction space, Major Shelke and her team ensured the bridge's completion. The structure now serves as a vital route for ongoing rescue operations. Her relentless dedication saw her working tirelessly in disaster-hit areas, often foregoing sleep and regular meals to facilitate rescues and recovery efforts.
Major Shelke’s approach to her work shatters conventional gender roles. “I don’t consider myself only as a woman; I am a soldier. I am here as a representative of the Indian Army and take immense pride in being a part of this launching team,” she stated. Her words reflect a commitment to equality and service, inspiring many as she continues her work in Wayanad.
