New Delhi: Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has found himself at the center of numerous controversies surrounding the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor. His involvement in the case has sparked widespread scrutiny and debate, raising questions about his leadership and handling of the situation during his tenure as principal.

Dr Sandip Ghosh is being questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the CGO complex in Salt Lake on Friday. He had previously avoided questioning despite multiple summonses, prompting a last-ditch attempt to seek protection from the high court citing safety concerns. The CBI had issued yet another notice, which Ghosh ignored, leading to his current interrogation.

High Court intervenes as protests escalate

The Telegraph Online reported that the court responded to concerns raised by Dr Sandip Ghosh's lawyer about potential threats to his client's safety, specifically the risk of his home being set on fire, by saying: "Let him rest at home. The state is with you; they will provide 4-500 police personnel. Or, you can file an application, and we will give you central forces."

Following massive protests, Dr Sandip Ghosh stepped down as principal but was promptly appointed to the same position at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) by the West Bengal government. However, Ghosh faced further backlash for allegedly attempting to downplay the incident as a suicide. His new appointment sparked outrage among junior doctors at CNMCH, who expressed their disapproval by locking the principal's office doors. In response, the Calcutta High Court ordered Ghosh to take an extended leave of absence on Tuesday, amid the escalating controversy.

Sandip Ghosh joined hospital in 2021

Dr Sandip Ghosh's tenure as principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which began in 2021, has been marked by controversy. According to The Wire, numerous medical professionals and students have accused Ghosh, a known associate of the ruling TMC party, of running the hospital like his "personal fiefdom" through intimidation and threats. Soon after his arrival, a hunger strike was held outside his office, as reported by News 18, protesting the administration's decision to deny separate student and residence hall councils, sparking widespread disapproval among students and staff.

Work background of Sandip Ghosh

Dr Sandip Ghosh used to work as a vice principal and surgeon at Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC). In June 2023, he was moved to Murshidabad Medical College, but he refused to leave the principal's office, preventing the new principal from taking over. Despite this, he was promoted within 48 hours.

He was moved again in September 2023 after a ragging incident, but students connected to the Trinamool Congress party blocked the new principal from taking over for five days. Soon after, Ghosh returned to RG Kar Medical College.

The Calcutta High Court intervened on August 13, ordering the government to put Ghosh on an extended leave of absence due to his controversial reappointment.
