Rekha Gupta (X/ANI)
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially named Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. The announcement was made on Tuesday evening, following the selection process overseen by BJP’s appointed central observers—National Secretary Om Prakash Dhankar and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. Rekha Gupta is set to take the oath of office on Thursday, February 20, at Delhi’s iconic Ramlila Maidan. The grand event is expected to witness the presence of all BJP Chief Ministers from across the country.
Amid speculation over New Delhi MLA Parvesh Kumar’s sidelining in the race for the CM post, Rekha Gupta emerged as the strongest contender for the role. Her extensive political experience and deep-rooted connection with BJP’s leadership positioned her as the ideal candidate to lead the capital.
Rekha Gupta is a seasoned BJP leader with a distinguished political career. Currently serving as the General Secretary of Delhi BJP, the 50-year-old politician has previously held the position of National Vice President of BJP’s Mahila Morcha.
A lawyer by profession, Gupta secured a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections from the Shalimar Bagh (North-West) constituency, amassing 68,200 votes. Her political journey began in student politics, where she served as President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997. She later transitioned to mainstream politics, winning the Delhi Councillor elections from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007 and securing re-election in 2012. Additionally, she has served as the Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
According to reports by India Today, Gupta is a graduate of Daulat Ram College, Delhi, and has been actively involved in several initiatives led by Delhi BJP. Her leadership experience and prior tenure as Mayor made her a strong choice for the Chief Minister’s position.
While discussions regarding the appointment of Delhi’s next Chief Minister were initiated earlier, the formal announcement was delayed due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from the United States. The appointed observers thoroughly assessed the political landscape before finalizing Gupta’s selection, along with the appointment of six cabinet ministers. However, reports indicate that unlike other states, Delhi might not have a Deputy Chief Minister.
Rekha Gupta and her cabinet ministers will be sworn in on February 20 at Ramlila Maidan. The event is expected to be attended by key political leaders and BJP’s top brass as the party takes charge of Delhi after a historic electoral victory.
