Ratan Tata, the iconic chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away at the age of 86. Known for his visionary leadership and profound impact on India’s business landscape, Tata’s passing has left a deep void. Just days before, he had reassured the public in a social media post that his health was stable, and he was undergoing routine medical checks due to his age.

A legacy of excellence

In a heartfelt statement on Wednesday, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, announced the passing of Mr. Tata. He highlighted the industrialist’s unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation. "It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation," said Mr. Chandrasekaran. He further added that Ratan Tata was more than just a chairman—he was a mentor, a guide, and a friend.

Tributes from across the nation

As the news spread, tributes poured in from leaders and industrialists across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Ratan Tata as a "visionary business leader and compassionate soul" and lauded his leadership and contribution to society beyond the boardroom.

Other prominent figures, including Rahul Gandhi, Gautam Adani, Anand Mahindra, Mukesh Ambani, and Sundar Pichai, expressed their deep condolences, emphasising Tata’s transformative role in Indian industry and his philanthropic legacy.

A pioneering business career

Ratan Tata served as the chairman of Tata Group twice, first from 1991 to 2012 and then from 2016 to 2017. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded globally, acquiring iconic brands like Jaguar and Land Rover. He was also instrumental in launching the Tata Nano, a car that became a symbol of innovation and affordability.

Tata’s legacy extends far beyond business, with his deep involvement in philanthropic causes, particularly in education, healthcare, and animal rights. Even after retirement, he remained a popular figure, known for his social media presence and compassionate appeals for various causes.

A national icon

Throughout his career, Ratan Tata was honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations as a beacon of leadership, integrity, and philanthropy.
