Punjab News: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt outside the revered Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday. Badal, who was performing the duties of a ‘sewadar’ while seated in a wheelchair, became the target of a gunman identified as Narain Singh Chaura. Fortunately, the bullet missed its mark and struck a nearby wall, leaving Badal unharmed.

Quick Action Prevents Tragedy

The assailant, Narain Singh Chaura, a Khalistani former militant with a history of criminal cases, aimed directly at Badal. However, a vigilant sewadar standing nearby intervened at the crucial moment, deflecting Chaura’s hand upward and causing the shot to miss. Eyewitnesses confirmed that Chaura had been seen lingering near Badal a day before the incident, raising concerns about premeditated intentions.

Who Is Narain Singh Chaura?

Chaura is a controversial figure linked to the Khalistani movement. Hailing from the Dera Baba Nanak area, he gained notoriety for masterminding the infamous Burail jailbreak, which enabled Babbar Khalsa International terrorists Jagtar Singh Hawara, Paramjit Singh Bheora, Jagtar Singh Tara, and Devi Singh to escape. During the jailbreak, Chaura disrupted the jail’s power supply to execute his plan.

This incident has sparked widespread outrage and discussions about security lapses at one of India’s most sacred sites. The fact that Chaura could approach Badal with a firearm has raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures. Authorities are now investigating Chaura’s motives and whether the attack was part of a larger conspiracy.
