Meet Mehraj Malik: AAP's only candidate who won in Jammu-Kashmir

Mehraj Malik, representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is contesting the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections from the Doda constituency. Malik, a prominent political figure in the region, has previously served as an elected District Development Council (DDC) Councillor and holds a Post Graduate degree.

Jammu&Kashmir elections: Mehraj Malik, the Aam Aadmi Party's candidate, is leading the race for the Doda constituency in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The election in Jammu & Kashmir is scheduled for September 18, 2024. Malik, 36, holds a postgraduate degree and has been actively engaged in the region's political landscape. Professionally, he serves as a District Development Council (DDC) counsellor. Financially, Malik’s declared assets amount to Rs 29,070, with Rs 2 lakh in liabilities.

Mehraj Malik's political journey

Born in 1988, Mehraj Malik has emerged as a rising leader in Jammu and Kashmir's political arena. He made history by becoming AAP’s first and only winning candidate in J&K as of 2022, representing the Kahara constituency in the DDC elections. On October 17, 2022, Malik was appointed as the co-chairman of AAP’s J&K State Coordination Committee.

Malik’s political career began in 2013 when he joined AAP and later contested as an independent candidate in the 2014 Assembly elections. In 2020, he won the DDC polls by a margin of 3,511 votes, solidifying his position in the Kahara constituency. He is widely recognised for popularising the slogan "Inquilab Zindabad" within his constituency, a phrase that resonates throughout Jammu and Kashmir. Another slogan, "Majja Majja Raj Karega" (translated as "Mehraj will rule"), is frequently chanted during his rallies.

Legal challenges and activism

Mehraj Malik faced legal issues following a protest against a land eviction drive in Jammu. Authorities detained him after allegations surfaced that he delivered a speech during a violent incident at the protest site. However, Malik was released on bail on February 10, 2023.
