Dhubri: In a major win against terrorism, the Assam Police apprehended two high-ranking members of ISIS in India on Thursday, March 20th, 2024. The arrested individuals, identified as Haris Farooqi (alias Harish Ajmal Farukhi) and Anurag Singh (alias Rehan), were reportedly planning sabotage activities within the country.

Acting on intelligence

The Assam Police received crucial intel from collaborating agencies, indicating the presence of top ISIS leaders in a neighboring nation, planning to infiltrate India through the Dhubri sector with malicious intent. Based on this information, a specialized team led by Inspector General of Police (STF) Sri Parthasarathi Mahanta and Additional SP Sri Kalyan Kumar Pathak swiftly mobilized to locate and apprehend the suspects.

Apprehension at the border

Through a well-coordinated operation, the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) successfully apprehended Farooqi and Singh near the international border shortly after they crossed over from Bangladesh. Both individuals were reportedly wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for prior offenses.

Who are Haris Farooqi, Anurag Singh?

Haris Farooqi, a resident of Dehradun, is identified as the leader of ISIS in India. His accomplice, Anurag Singh, hails from Panipat, Haryana, and converted to Islam before marrying a Bangladeshi national. The police have described both men as highly radicalized and instrumental in furthering ISIS activities in India, including recruitment drives, terror funding, and plotting attacks with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) across various locations.

Cases and next steps

According to the STF, Farooqi and Singh are facing charges registered by the NIA in New Delhi and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Lucknow. The Assam Police have announced their intention to transfer the accused to the NIA for further legal proceedings.

Applauding the Assam Police for their commendable operation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media, stating, "We shall continue our fight against fundamentalism and eradicate terrorism from the soil of our nation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi."
