New Delhi: A shocking incident has come to light from Uttar Pradesh's Meerut, where a 27-year-old woman named Sarita allegedly fell victim to a brutal acid attack by her in-laws due to dowry demands. Despite receiving treatment for over a month, her condition continued to deteriorate, ultimately leading to her tragic death.

Abused for dowry, bride seeks help

Sarita, a resident of Bakharwa village in Modinagar, was married on February 5, 2023, to Dharmendra, a local man from Madhavpuram, as part of the Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme. This initiative is intended to support economically disadvantaged families by facilitating marriages without dowry demands. However, Sarita's marriage quickly turned into a nightmare.

Following the wedding, her in-laws reportedly began demanding a dowry, which included one lakh rupees and a motorcycle. When Sarita's family was unable to meet these demands, her husband, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law allegedly subjected her to physical abuse. They resorted to constant harassment, making her life unbearable. Sarita’s family attempted to support her through this tough time, but fearing for her safety, she chose to remain silent, hoping the situation would improve.

Video surfaces on social media

Husband's brutal attempt on Sarita's life

The horrifying situation escalated on August 16, 2024, when Sarita was allegedly forced to consume acid by her husband and his family in a brutal attempt on her life. Neighbors found her in distress and rushed her to the hospital, where she received emergency treatment. Despite medical intervention, her health did not improve, and she suffered greatly from the effects of the acid. Instead of continuing her treatment, her in-laws made the shocking decision to bring her back to her maternal home in Modinagar, effectively abandoning her care.

Family appeals for justice

In a desperate bid for justice, Sarita’s family sought help from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). While a report was filed at the Brahmpuri police station, the accused were not arrested. This lack of action only added to the family’s frustration and grief. On the day of her death, Sarita went to the SSP's office, where she waited for an extended period, receiving nothing but empty assurances.

As the family mourned their loss, they felt helpless against the justice system that seemed to overlook their plight. The sense of betrayal grew as they realized that their cries for help had gone unheard.

Controversial statements from police

The Station Officer (SO) of Brahmpuri later claimed that after being discharged from the hospital on September 29, Sarita visited the Madhavpuram police station. The SO alleged that Sarita stated in writing that she had consumed acid of her own accord due to her in-laws' harassment. He claimed she expressed a desire to continue living with her husband, a statement that left her family in disbelief and anger. Following this, her brother filed a complaint, which led to a report being registered on September 16.

Mother's heartbreak

In a heartbreaking moment, Sarita's mother, Shashi, wept while holding her daughter's lifeless body. She explained that they had arranged the marriage under the Chief Minister's scheme due to financial constraints. Shashi accused Sarita’s in-laws of taking her life out of greed for dowry. Sarita was the youngest of four siblings, and her brother, Narendra, reiterated the family's ongoing struggle against the dowry demands. He stated that they had filed a report at Brahmpuri police but saw no action, leading to an overwhelming sense of injustice.

Investigation is ongoing

Ayush Vikram Singh, the City SP of Meerut, confirmed that Dharmendra and his sister-in-law Anaita have been arrested. Efforts are underway to apprehend the brother-in-law, Samay Singh. Singh also indicated that charges related to dowry murder would be added to the case. This development offers a glimmer of hope for Sarita’s family, who long for justice.
