Enforcement Directorate (ED) has served Kerala’s Congress chief K Sudhakaran for questioning in a fraud (cheating) case, in which alleged fake antique dealer Monson Mavunkal is the prime accused, said sources.

ED summons Kerala Congress chief K Sudhakaran in fraud case

According to sources, Sudhakaran has to appear before the probe agency on August 8 in Kochi.

The case came to light two years back on September 13, 2021, when six people filed a police complaint alleging that Mavunkal cheated them of ₹10 crore. Further, they alleged that the state’s Congress chief, Sudhakaran was also present in the room when they handed over ₹25 lakh to the prime accused at the latter’s house in Kochi’s Kaloor. Amid this, several pictures of the party supremo and Mavunkal have surfaced on social media.

However, Sudhakaran has denied all the allegations against him, saying he is innocent and that he visited the accused for treatment as the latter had claimed to be a cosmetologist.

Why Sudhakaran arrested recently?

Earlier on June 24, Sudhakaran, who is also Lok Sabha MP from Kannur, was arrested by the crime branch under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 420, 120 (B) and 34 after being arraigned as the second accused in the case. But later, he was let off on bail granted by the Kerala high court.

The ED filed a money laundering case against Mavunkal based on the crime branch FIR in 2022.

KC Venugopal on ED summon

Meahwile, backing up Sudhakaran, Congress’ general secretary KC Venugopal has termed the ED notice to the leader a ‘mode of persecution.’

“ED, CBI, and IT have all become part of the weapons department of the BJP. Let him be called. We don’t fear the law,” he said.
