Indian cricket star Mohammed Shami has come under criticism from Maulana Shahabuddin Barelvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, for not observing Roza (fasting) during the holy month of Ramadan. The cleric stated that Shami’s actions were against Islamic principles, calling it a “grave sin.”
"All reasonable and mature men and women must fast according to Islamic law. Mohammed Shami has committed a serious religious transgression by failing to observe Roza, according to Maulana Shahabuddin. Additionally, he stated, "From a Shariat perspective, this is a crime. I advise him to rigorously adhere to Islamic responsibilities.
The comments came after a video of Shami drinking juice during India’s semi-final match against Australia in the Champions Trophy went viral. While some criticized him for prioritizing cricket over fasting, many praised him for putting his country first.
Shami became a central figure in India's win over Australia despite the fuss. He returned three important wickets, rupturing partnerships when it mattered, and finishing at 3/48. It guaranteed India qualification for the March 9 Dubai final of the Champions Trophy to face New Zealand.
The sacred period of Ramadan commenced in India on March 2 with fasting, prayer, and charity (zakat), which is also one of the five pillars of Islam. Fasting for this period is regarded as a central religious obligation for Muslims everywhere.
The issue has been contentious on social media with people disagreeing on whether religion or job matters more. There are some people who approve of Shami leaving his fast on the way out, others disapprove thinking he should stay to religious habits even in hard circumstances.
