The comments came after a video of Shami drinking juice during India’s semi-final match against Australia in the Champions Trophy went viral. While some criticized him for prioritizing cricket over fasting, many praised him for putting his country first.
Shami became a central figure in India's win over Australia despite the fuss. He returned three important wickets, rupturing partnerships when it mattered, and finishing at 3/48. It guaranteed India qualification for the March 9 Dubai final of the Champions Trophy to face New Zealand.
The sacred period of Ramadan commenced in India on March 2 with fasting, prayer, and charity (zakat), which is also one of the five pillars of Islam. Fasting for this period is regarded as a central religious obligation for Muslims everywhere.
