Delhi: A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 struck Nepal on Tuesday morning and caused tremors across North India, including Delhi-NCR and Bihar. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the quake was at 93 km northeast of Lobuche near the Nepal-Tibet border at 6:35 AM IST. Residents in many areas, especially Bihar, came out of their homes and apartments in fear. However, there is no report of damage to property yet.

Nepal seismic vulnerability

Nepal is located in a very seismically active region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge. This collision forms the mighty Himalayas but makes the region prone to frequent earthquakes. Lobuche, the epicenter of the quake, is located near the Khumbu Glacier, 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu and close to the Everest Base Camp.

Earthquake epicenter details

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the epicenter of the quake at latitude 28.86°N and longitude 87.51°E in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), bordering Nepal, at a depth of 10 kilometers. In a statement, the NCS tweeted:

"EQ of M: 7.1, On: 07/01/2025 06:35:18 IST, Lat: 28.86 N, Long: 87.51 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Xizang."Emergency response teams in both Nepal and India are on high alert, advising citizens to keep calm and prepared for potential aftershocks.

Aftershocks reported

Two more quakes were reported immediately after the first quake. A 4.7 magnitude quake was reported at 7:02 AM IST. Its epicenter was located at latitude 28.60°N and longitude 87.68°E at a depth of 10 kilometers. Then, at 7:07 AM IST, another quake of magnitude 4.9 occurred. The origin of this quake was at latitude 28.68°N and longitude 87.54°E at a depth of 30 kilometers.

No damage reports were received

While the tremors were very strongly felt in the affected regions, including parts of North India, preliminary reports indicate no structural damage. Authorities are maintaining vigilance and advising precautionary measures.
