What is Muscular Dystrophy?

A series of more than 30 hereditary illnesses known together as muscular dystrophy (MD) results in gradual weakening and degradation of the skeletal muscles required for voluntary movement. These disorders vary according to the age of onset, severity, and pattern of affected muscles. In most of the cases, changes in the DNA sequence that affect muscle proteins are seen. The mutations are usually inherited, but in some cases, they take place spontaneously. These unforced mutations can then be inherited by an affected person’s offspring.

There are many types of Muscular Dystrophy, and most of them can be diagnosed in childhood, but there are several types that can appear during adolescence and adulthood.

Symptoms of the disability

Several symptoms can be seen in a person who is suffering from muscular dystrophy. People may experience pain in the muscles, abnormality in walking, flaccid muscles, muscle weakness, loss of muscles, or permanent shortening of muscles. Constantly walking on tiptoe, constipation, difficulty in swallowing, fatigue, and shallow breathing can also be seen as part of the symptoms.
