The top court on Tuesday has instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has been tasked with looking into the Manipur sexual assault case, not to record the victims’ statements because the court is scheduled to discuss the case in the afternoon.
The CBI team’s arrival to record the women’s statements was announced to the bench, which is presided over by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud. According to the sources, CJI has instructed the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to convey this to agency to wait for the conclusion of the hearing due today. “SG, just ask them to wait. We are going to take it at 2 pm today,” the CJI said.
The video showing two women in Manipur being paraded naked was deemed ‘horrendous’ by the highest court on Monday amid claims that the police had turned the two over to the rioting mob. It asked probing questions concerning the FIR’s delayed registration and suggested creating a SIT or committee of retired judges to oversee the investigation.
