Manipur schools to reopen from today

Amid the fresh bout of protests seen in strife-torn Manipur’s Imphal city, the state government ordered the closure of schools on September 27 and September 29.

Notably, the schools were shut since the ethnic clashes erupted on May 03 in the northeastern state. After remaining shut for over a couple of months due to the clashes, the schools were reopened across Manipur in July.

Meanwhile, another violence broke out in the Imphal West district on Thursday, where two houses were set on fire and several rounds of bullets were fired.

Why Manipur violence occur?

Since the violence erupted in the northeastern state, over 175 people have lost their lives while thousands of people have been displaced. This occurred when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.
