New Delhi: In a tragic escalation of violence in Manipur, two people, including a woman, were killed, and several others injured in a suspected militant attack in Imphal West district on Sunday. The attack occurred near Koutruk in the Kangchup region of Imphal West. According to local officials, suspected armed militants began firing without provocation around 2 PM, targeting areas where village volunteers were absent. The attack left a trail of destruction and casualties, with the use of sophisticated weaponry marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.One of the victims has been identified as 33-year-old Surbala Devi from Phayeng Umang Leikai. She was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital in Imphal but was declared dead on arrival. Her 13-year-old daughter, Ng Rojiya, sustained injuries to her right hand and is currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital.The attack also injured 30-year-old police officer N Robert, a resident of Awang Khunou Maning Leikai. Additionally, 26-year-old Inao Takhellambam and 19-year-old Thadoi Heigrujam were wounded in the assault. Both were transported to Raj Medicity Hospital, where they are being treated for injuries to the lower abdomen and right shoulder, respectively.Curfew imposed in Imphal WestIn response to the attack, the local administration imposed a curfew in Imphal West district. The Manipur government condemned the violence, vowing to take strict action against those responsible. A statement from the states home ministry expressed deep concern over the use of high-tech drones and sophisticated weapons, describing the act as a serious threat to peace and normalcy in the region.The state government has learned about the unfortunate incident of an attack on unarmed Koutruk villagers using drones, bombs, and many sophisticated weapons reportedly by Kuki militants, causing the death of two persons, including one woman, and injuries to many, the statement read.Police on high alertManipur Police also issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), calling the attack a huge escalation in tensions, with militants allegedly deploying RPGs via drones. The police noted that the use of such advanced technology suggests the involvement of highly trained professionals with technical expertise.In light of the attack, senior police officials have been ordered to remain on maximum alert, with all forces in the area on high vigilance. Joint combing operations have been initiated to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of civilians.
