New Delhi: In response to the escalating use of drones by militants in Manipur, security forces have intensified their countermeasures. The Assam Rifles has rolled out anti-drone systems in vulnerable areas, while the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has tested and deployed its own anti-drone technology in the region, according to a statement from Manipur Police.
The recent spike in drone-based violence has prompted the state to urgently bolster its defense capabilities. Since September 1, militants have increasingly utilized drones and rockets, in addition to conventional weaponry such as rifles and grenades. The situation, initially marked by ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has escalated into a full-blown security crisis.

Last Sunday, militants used drones to drop explosives, resulting in one death. This attack was followed by two additional drone strikes, raising significant concerns about the use of such technology for hostile purposes. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has condemned these acts as "acts of terrorism."
Over the past six months, security forces have successfully intercepted at least 18 drones used primarily for surveillance. However, the recent shift to offensive drone attacks has led to the deployment of anti-drone systems. Additional units of this technology are expected soon, and the state police are in the process of procuring more equipment.
A central government committee, comprising senior police, army, and paramilitary officials, is currently investigating the use of explosive-laden drones. The committee's findings are anticipated by September 13. Meanwhile, intensified combing operations are underway to target the areas from which these drones and rockets are launched, covering a range of 3-5 kilometers around identified hotspots.
