Schools from Classes 1 to 8 have reopened in Manipur today, as per an order issued by the Manipur Department of Education.

An order issued by L Nandakumar Singh, Director of Education – Schools, read, “In supersession of all orders issued in this regard, normal classes for Class 1 to 8 for all schools in the state, will resume from 5th of July, 2023 [Wednesday]. All zonal education officers under the department of education-schools, Manipur are hereby directed to inform all concerned and take up necessary actions accordingly.”

The schools in Manipur were closed due to the raging ethnic violence in the state, which started two months ago and has led to more than 120 deaths. More than 40,000 people have been displaced by the clashes between the majority Meitei and minority Kuki-Zo tribes.

Reopening of Manipur schools decided by CM Biren Singh

The decision to reopen the school was taken during a unified command meeting chaired by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, which was attended by representatives from the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, and Manipur police.

Among other things, the Chief Minister said, “Schools will reopen for Classes 1 to 8 from Wednesday.”

Manipur has approximately 1,110 schools, of which 643 are private schools, 384 are government schools, and 83 are aided schools, as per the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur.

The situation in the state is far from calm, and fresh violence in the Thoubal district on Tuesday left one miscreant dead and one Assam Rifles personnel injured.
