New Delhi: Protests have erupted in both Delhi and Imphal, reflecting the ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. The protests coincide with significant demands regarding the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). In Imphal, Meitei protesters organized a 5-kilometer rally advocating for the withdrawal of AFSPA, chanting slogans such as “Save Manipur” and “Do not obliterate Manipur.” This rally was particularly poignant as it took place on Human Rights Day, drawing support from various civil society organizations, including the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation and the Manipur Students’ Federation.

Kuki MLAs Demand AFSPA Extension

Simultaneously, in New Delhi, ten Kuki MLAs staged a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar, calling for the extension of AFSPA throughout the entire state. They argue that this measure is essential for recovering over 6,000 weapons that were looted amid the ethnic violence that began on May 3, 2023. The MLAs assert that restoring order is crucial following a recent surge in violence, which has seen the discovery of six bodies—three women and three children—in the Jiri and Barak rivers last November.

Since May 2023, violent clashes between the predominantly valley-dwelling Meiteis and the hill-dwelling Kuki-Zo communities have resulted in over 250 fatalities and displaced thousands. The situation remains precarious as tensions continue to escalate. In response to the unrest, authorities have reinstated AFSPA in six police station areas significantly affected by violence, including Jiribam.

Human Rights Concerns

The ongoing ethnic conflict has raised serious human rights concerns as both communities grapple with loss and displacement. The clashes have not only claimed lives but have also led to widespread fear and instability across Manipur. Civil society groups are urging the government to take decisive action to restore peace and protect vulnerable populations.

The protests in both Delhi and Imphal highlight the urgent need for dialogue and resolution to address the underlying issues fueling this ethnic violence. As both communities demand their rights and safety, it is imperative for authorities to engage constructively to foster peace and understanding.
