New Delhi: Protests have intensified in both Delhi and Imphal as ethnic violence continues to escalate between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. The demonstrations are centered around the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), with each community voicing opposing demands. In Imphal, Meitei protesters organized a 5-kilometer rally, advocating for the withdrawal of AFSPA while chanting slogans like “Save Manipur” and “Do not obliterate Manipur.” This rally coincided with Human Rights Day and saw support from various civil society organizations, including the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation and the Manipur Students’ Federation.

Kuki MLAs Demand AFSPA Extension

In contrast, ten Kuki MLAs staged a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, calling for the extension of AFSPA throughout the entire state. They argue that this measure is crucial for recovering over 6,000 weapons that were looted during the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. The MLAs highlighted their concerns following a recent surge in violence, which was tragically underscored by the discovery of six bodies—three women and three children—in the Jiri and Barak rivers last November.

Casualties and Displacement

Since May 2023, clashes between the predominantly valley-dwelling Meiteis and hill-dwelling Kuki-Zo communities have resulted in over 250 deaths and displaced thousands. In response to the ongoing unrest, the Indian government has reinstated AFSPA in six police station areas severely affected by violence, including Jiribam. The act grants special powers to armed forces to maintain law and order but has been criticized for its implications on human rights.

Public Sentiment and Calls for Action

The contrasting protests reflect deep-seated frustrations within both communities regarding safety, governance, and representation. While Meitei protesters seek to end what they view as excessive military presence, Kuki leaders argue that AFSPA is necessary to restore stability and recover lost arms. The situation remains volatile as both sides demand urgent attention from authorities to address their grievances.

As protests unfold in both Delhi and Imphal, it is evident that the situation in Manipur requires immediate dialogue and resolution. The ongoing ethnic violence has not only claimed lives but has also led to widespread fear among residents. It is crucial for government officials to engage with community leaders from both sides to foster understanding and work towards a peaceful resolution.
