The mother of one of the tribal women who were paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a mob in Manipur has demanded capital punishment for the culprits involved, news reports said on Sunday.

Speaking to news outlet PTI after a delegation of 21 MPs from the opposition coalition INDIA met her during their visit to ethnic strife-torn Manipur, the grieving mother expressed her lack of trust in the N Biren Singh-led state government. She stated, “I trust the central government but not the state government.”

The 21-year-old victim’s mother also pleaded to see the remains of her son and husband, who lost their lives on the same fateful day on May 4. The incident has left a deep scar on the community, leading the mother to assert that tribals cannot coexist with the Meitei community any longer.

“The thing I want to convey is that we the tribals, the minority, we can’t live with the Meitei any more, and second, if possible I want to at least see the dead bodies of my son and husband,” the victim’s mother said.

TMC, DMK MPs visit Manipur sexual assault victim’s mother

TMC MP Sushmita Dev and DMK MP Kanimozhi, who were part of the opposition delegation, conveyed the victim’s anguish and desperation for justice.

Dev stated, “Her daughter was raped, and her husband and son were killed by the mob in the presence of Manipur Police but till today, not a single police officer has been suspended.”

Dev emphasised the gravity of the situation, revealing the victim’s fear of the police, stating, “If a victim does not trust the police any more then it is a constitutional crisis.”

Kanimozhi also expressed her sorrow over the heartbreaking loss, saying, “It is so sad to see a woman whose daughter was raped. She lost her husband and her son on the same day and there is no justice for them.”

The victim’s father served in the Indian Army, she added.

In response to the heinous incident, the Centre has transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and requested the Supreme Court to move the trial outside of Manipur for a fair judgment. The Centre aims to conclude the trial within six months of the CBI filing the charge sheet.

So far, seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the sexual assault incident, and the device used to record the video has been recovered.
