Citing the prevailing situation in the state, the Manipur government on Wednesday denied the permission for the proposed 66-day ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ to be launched from Imphal by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

According to the information, the Congress party had formally submitted a written request on January 2 to seek the permission to launch the rally on January 14 from Hatta Kangjeibung ground, Imphal East district. However, being silent on the request for some time, a team of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) led by its president K Meghachandra Singh met Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday.

Responding to the same, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ will start from Manipur at any cost. While speaking at a press conference, Venugopal added that “...We got information that the Government of Manipur declined (our request) to hold the yatra in Palace Ground, Imphal...When we are starting a yatra from East to West, how can we avoid Manipur? Then what message we are giving to the people of the country? We need to start the yatra from Manipur only. We are now going to start Yatra in Manipur from another location. Details will be announced later..."

He further asserted that their party do not want to politicise the yatra. “We are ready to cooperate with the government, on whatever level we can do. But we are very sure that we will start the Yatra from Manipur itself...,” he added.
