Moreh: In a disturbing incident, a jawan from the Manipur security force sustained injuries in a targeted ambush by suspected armed militants. The attack unfolded in Moreh town, located in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur. The assailants, deploying improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other explosives, targeted the security forces at 3:30 pm on Saturday.

Retaliatory response

Swiftly responding to the ambush, the state security forces engaged in a retaliatory response, resulting in a gunfight. The unidentified gunmen specifically targeted vehicles transporting police commandos as they moved towards the Key Location Point (KLP) from Moreh.

Injured personnel under treatment

Among the casualties, a police personnel sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the 5 Assam Rifles camp, as reported by news agency PTI. The situation remains tense as security forces grapple with the armed confrontation initiated by the militants.

Tensions persists in Manipur

This incident follows the tragic ambush last month in the Kangpokpi district, where an India Reserve Battalion (IRB) jawan and a civilian lost their lives to unidentified armed assailants. The ambush occurred between Haraothel and Kobsha villages, highlighting the persistent security challenges in the region.

Ethnic strife in Manipur

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, triggered by the 'Tribal Solidarity March.' This march, a protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, intensified existing tensions. The strife was further fueled by disputes over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, leading to a series of agitations.

Complex demographics: Meiteis, Nagas, Kukis

Manipur's complex demographics contribute to the intricate situation, with Meiteis constituting 53% of the population, primarily residing in the Imphal Valley. The remaining 40% comprises Nagas and Kukis, residing in the hill districts. The ethnic clashes have resulted in over 180 lives lost, necessitating the deployment of around 10,000 army and para-military personnel to restore normalcy in the northeastern state.
