New Delhi: In a shocking turn of events, a marital disagreement took a tragic turn when a husband allegedly killed his wife at Karkada, near Saligrama, on Friday—just eight months into their marriage. The victim, Jayashree (31), originally from Donagapura in Bidar, was married to Kiran Upadhya (44), an assistant cook in temples and a resident of Gundmi, Sastan. The incident has stunned the local community.

Addiction to reel videos, tensions over money

Jayashree was reportedly addicted to creating reel videos, often featuring herself and occasionally her husband, which she would share on social media. Although the videos portrayed a happy and seemingly harmonious couple, the reality was far from it. Tensions simmered beneath the surface, particularly over Jayashree’s addiction to online shopping. She was known to spend thousands of rupees, leading to frequent quarrels. She also demanded luxuries such as a big house, a luxury car, and large sums of money, further straining their relationship.

Jayashree belonged to the Panchamasali community in Bidar and came from a family of temple priests. She was previously married to a man from Mangaluru, who had since passed away. After marrying Kiran, the couple moved out of their respective family homes within two months and began renting a house owned by an acquaintance in Karkada.

Heated argument leads to murder

On Thursday night, a heated argument broke out between the couple. According to reports, Kiran, in a fit of rage, allegedly attacked Jayashree with a sickle. Their landlord, who lived on the ground floor, was away in Mangaluru at the time of the incident, leaving the crime unnoticed until later.

Following the attack, Kiran reportedly tried to dispose of Jayashree’s body, initially planning to bury it in a cow dung pit. However, he eventually called friends and relatives, claiming that his wife had slipped and fallen from the first floor and was unresponsive. Concerned, they urged him to take her to a hospital. At around 5:30 a.m., Kiran called a Jeevan Mitra ambulance and transported Jayashree’s body to a government hospital in Udupi. However, doctors declared her dead upon arrival.

Police investigation underway

After returning home from the hospital, Kiran allegedly attempted to clean up the bloodstains in the house. However, suspicious locals reported the situation to the police. Authorities soon arrived at the scene, took Kiran into custody, and initiated an investigation.

Udupi Additional SP S.T. Siddalingappa, DySP D.T. Prabhu, Brahmavar Circle Inspector Divakara, and other police personnel visited the scene to conduct an inspection. Authorities also revealed that Jayashree’s relatives were expected to arrive in Kota on Saturday, after which her body would be handed over to them.

Is it a premeditated murder?

Locals believe the murder may have been premeditated. Kiran had reportedly purchased a new sickle from a local market on Thursday evening and was heard speaking ill of his wife to friends and relatives before the incident.

The tragic case has left the community in shock, raising questions about the underlying issues that escalated into such a brutal crime.
