New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken a significant step by writing a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to introduce strict laws to deal with rape cases, which comes at a time when the public is outraged and demanding justice for the brutal rape and murder of a young doctor who was training at a government hospital in Kolkata, a horrific crime that has sparked widespread anger and calls for action.
The government led by Mamata Banerjee has come under severe criticism for its handling of the shocking rape and murder case of a young doctor, as well as the violent protests and damage caused by angry crowds at the RG Kar hospital, where the horrific incident occurred, leading to widespread outrage and demands for accountability.
Mamata Banerjee has pointed fingers at the opposition parties, specifically the BJP and the Left parties, accusing them of being responsible for the destructive vandalism at the RG Kar Hospital, and further alleged that they tried to tamper with or destroy crucial evidence related to the brutal rape and murder case, in an attempt to disrupt the investigation.
A horrific crime occurred on August 9, when a young trainee doctor was brutally raped in the seminar hall of the hospital and her lifeless body was discovered, sparking widespread shock and outrage. In response to this heinous act, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, vowed on the very next day to push for the severest penalty possible, the death sentence, for the person responsible, in a bid to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
Mamata Banerjee also gave a clear deadline to the police, stating that if they failed to solve the case by August 18, she would transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), making it clear that she expected swift action and results in the probe.
On August 13, the Calcutta High Court took a significant step by transferring the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In its ruling, the Court pointed out "serious lapses" by the hospital administration and noted that, despite five days passing, the investigation had not made any meaningful progress, saying even after five days, there had been no significant progress in the investigation.
On August 17, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a large and vocal protest march through the streets of Kolkata, calling for justice to be served for the young doctor who was brutally raped and murdered. She demanded that the person responsible, a civic volunteer who worked with the police, be held accountable and face the ultimate punishment, the death penalty for their heinous crime.
