New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the BJP and CPI(M) of orchestrating Bangladesh-style protests to topple her government after opposition leaders demanded her resignation. The calls for her to step down followed the horrific rape and murder of a medical student in Kolkata, which has sparked widespread outrage.

Banerjee, addressing the allegations, claimed, "CPM and BJP are trying to organize Bangladesh-like protests to capture power in Bengal." She further asserted, "You are free to abuse me, but don't abuse West Bengal." The Chief Minister defended her administration, stating that the government had "taken all necessary actions in the doctor's rape-murder case," despite what she described as a "malicious campaign" against her.

Banerjee also urged striking doctors in the state to return to work, emphasizing the importance of their duties during this critical time. Earlier in the day, BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, staged protests, demanding Banerjee's resignation as both Chief Minister and Health Minister. Adhikari stated, "We want the resignation of the Health Minister and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Today, even those who have never protested before are raising their voices, with doctors, nurses, and health officials uniting. Private hospital doctors are also not doing OPD today. Meanwhile, CM Mamata Banerjee is shamelessly celebrating Kanyashree Divas, with biryani being distributed."

The CPI(M) also criticized Banerjee, calling for her resignation but also questioning the BJP's selective outrage. CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali argued, "Many are demanding the Chief Minister's resignation, and it should happen. But why does the Railway Minister not resign when rail accidents occur almost every week? Calling for resignations while ignoring your own ministers is not justified."

The incident that triggered these demands occurred on August 9 when a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the crime, and the case was transferred to the CBI on Tuesday for further investigation.
