A huge fire ignited at the Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi, prompting emergency response efforts from the authorities. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) responded to a distress call at 5:22 PM and dispatched two fire tenders to the scene. Ongoing efforts are focused on extinguishing the flames, with local police notified about the incident.

In addition to the fire department's response, excavators from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been mobilized to assist in controlling the fire and preventing further escalation.

Political criticism

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, citing unfulfilled promises regarding the clearance of the Ghazipur landfill. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor highlighted the inconvenience caused to residents and businesses due to the smoke engulfing the area.

Social media reaction

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Singh took to social media to express concerns about the failure in waste management policies, emphasizing the urgency of addressing such environmental hazards.

Environmental concerns

The Ghazipur landfill, a towering mound of waste, has been a persistent environmental challenge. Previous incidents, including a fatal collapse in 2017, underscore the dangers associated with the site. The landfill has witnessed multiple fire incidents in the past, with one in March 2022 requiring over 50 hours to be fully extinguished.

What Arvind Kejriwal had promised?

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had pledged to resolve the landfill issue by December 31 last year, ahead of the 2022 MCD elections. However, the accumulation of additional garbage at the site suggests ongoing challenges in waste management efforts.
