In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the role of the media is more crucial than ever. However, with the power to shape public opinion comes the responsibility to ensure accurate and balanced reporting. It is imperative that media outlets exercise caution and integrity in their coverage, especially when addressing issues of public concern.

Call for Responsible Reporting

In one of the recent 3.22 minutes long video, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra targeted some of the media organizations for spreading fake news. In the video shared by her on her X handle, Moitra said that the houses must prioritize accuracy and reliability, particularly in times of crisis or when covering sensitive topics. Misinformation can lead to widespread panic, misunderstanding, and even harm. Therefore, it is essential for journalists and editors to verify facts before publishing and to approach each story with a commitment to truth.

Referring to the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata’s MG Kar Medical College and Hospital, she share the facts.

Here’s What she said:

She started the video with, “Hello, this is Mahua Moitra. I'm here to clarify some facts and dispel the myths and fake propaganda circulating on social media regarding the tragic rape and murder that occurred on August 9th at RG Hospital.”

Autopsy and Misleading Media Reports: There is a misleading claim about 150g of bodily fluids being reported by certain media outlets. The truth is, during the autopsy, which was conducted under judicial oversight and witnessed by three doctors and the victim's family, it was noted that the total weight of the inner and outer genitalia was approximately 150g. Bodily fluids are measured in milliliters, not grams. This figure pertains to the internal viscera of the reproductive organs, not bodily fluids.

Crime Scene Security: Allegations have been made that the crime scene was tampered with due to ongoing construction. In reality, the place of occurrence was immediately sealed off by the police after the crime was discovered. Access is restricted to the Calcutta Police and the CBI. Construction work, including the building of toilets and a rest area, was initiated elsewhere at the request of students, not at the crime scene.

Inquiry Committee Misconceptions: There is a false narrative that an inquiry was conducted into the victim's mental health. After the FIR was filed on August 9th, an internal committee was established to investigate any potential administrative lapses at the hospital. This committee, composed of department heads, was not tasked with examining the victim's psychiatric condition but was part of a standard procedure.

She emphasized the critical points that need to be understood to prevent misinformation.

Meanwhile, it is important to note that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is looking it to the case.
