Mahbubul Haq arrested! Assam CM Sarma’s crackdown on ‘Flood Jihad’ allegations intensifies

For the past year, Sarma has been consistently targeting Haq. The Chief Minister had accused him of deforestation and hill-cutting for the construction of the university, which he claimed led to sudden flooding in Guwahati.

Assam Police arrested Mahbubul Haque, the founder of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), from his residence in Guwahati following allegations made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. A senior Assam Police official confirmed that Haque was taken into custody on Friday in connection with a case registered in Sribhoomi district.

Haque’s arrest is linked to an incident at Central Public School in Patharkandi during the CBSE Class 12 Physics exam. According to police reports, the school, operated by the Education and Research Development (ERD) Foundation—also managing USTM—faced law-and-order disruptions due to unfulfilled promises of study material for students enrolled in the special coaching program ‘Vision 50.’ Authorities claim that this led to a severe situation, considered part of a criminal conspiracy.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s allegations

For over a year, CM Sarma has been vocal in his criticism of Haque, alleging that the university’s construction led to deforestation and illegal hill-cutting, resulting in floods in Guwahati. Sarma also claimed that the domes at USTM’s main entrance symbolized “jihad,” sparking widespread controversy.

In August last year, Sarma accused USTM of contributing to Guwahati’s flood crisis by destroying green cover and altering the landscape. He termed it ‘flood jihad,’ suggesting a deliberate attempt to harm the region’s environment.

Debate over USTM’s architecture

Further intensifying his attacks, CM Sarma questioned the presence of domes at the university’s entrance, controversially stating, “It’s shameful that people have to pass under ‘Mecca.’ Why not build a Namghar or a church here too?” His remarks led to significant public outcry.

Political and legal fallout

Sarma also accused Haque of fraud, claiming USTM issued “fake certificates” and “degrees” to students. Additionally, he alleged that Haque had illegally obtained an OBC certificate in 1992. While USTM dismissed these allegations as baseless, the arrest has escalated tensions in the region.

With Haque now in custody, the case is expected to unfold further as legal proceedings continue.
