Maharashtra Assembly Elections: In a landmark move, the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra has rolled out a financial empowerment scheme for women ahead of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly Election. Launched on August 17, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan, the Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana aims to provide financial support to two crore women across the state. Under this scheme, each beneficiary receives ₹1,500 monthly, fostering financial independence and potentially influencing voter sentiment.Supporting womens financial independenceThis initiative, championed by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has already provided beneficiaries with five installments totaling ₹7,500. Fadnavis has countered critics who call the scheme a mere election strategy by hinting at a possible increase in the monthly payment to ₹3,000, underscoring the governments commitment to womens economic empowerment. The Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana builds on previous initiatives by the late Manohar Parrikar and has been adopted by various states before its launch in Maharashtra. Many women are using these funds to start or expand small businesses, which is not only enhancing their personal financial stability but also boosting local economies. The government has allocated ₹46,000 crore in the budget to ensure the programs longevity, with special provisions for continuous support even during election periods. Women and Child Welfare Minister Aditi Tatkare emphasised the programs permanence, reflecting a long-term vision for womens welfare.Political ramifications amid criticismAlthough the opposition has labelled the scheme as an electoral tactic, the governments commitment and the positive response from beneficiaries underscore its potential impact. The Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana could serve as a cornerstone for the Mahayuti governments campaign strategy, emphasising womens empowerment and gaining trust from beneficiaries. As the 2024 elections approach, this scheme could play a pivotal role in solidifying the Mahayuti governments appeal among women voters, bolstering its standing in the upcoming polls.
