Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar (ANI)
Maharashtra News: In a pivotal development regarding government formation in Maharashtra, BJP sources have announced that party MLAs will meet on Monday, December 2, to elect their legislative party leader. The chosen leader is slated to take oath as Chief Minister on Thursday, December 5, in Mumbai. This announcement comes amidst speculation over internal disagreements within the Mahayuti alliance regarding top posts and portfolio allocation.
Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s absence has fueled speculation about his dissatisfaction with the ongoing stalemate. Shinde traveled to his hometown, Satara, reportedly canceling a critical Mahayuti alliance meeting. However, Shiv Sena dismissed rumors of discord, clarifying that Shinde was unwell and expected to return for alliance discussions soon. Outgoing state minister Uday Samant emphasized that "he isn’t upset" and that Shinde remains committed to Maharashtra’s welfare and development.
The BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP alliance secured a landslide victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections, winning 233 out of 288 seats. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 132 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 57 and the NCP with 41 seats. However, the decision on the Chief Minister's post remains unresolved over a week after the results.
Reports suggest that Shinde is advocating for the Home Ministry and the Deputy Chief Minister position, akin to BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis during the previous government. Additionally, Shinde’s supporters have proposed he take up the role of Deputy Chief Minister to continue implementing key initiatives like the Ladli Behan Yojana. However, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat hinted that Shinde might decline a subordinate position, aiming instead to be Mahayuti’s Convener.
The BJP is steadfast in its decision to appoint Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister. Shinde, meanwhile, has reassured his alliance partners that he will support decisions made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
