Uttar Pradesh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath twice within an hour on Wednesday to assess the aftermath of a stampede-like situation at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The tragic incident occurred at the Triveni Sangam during the Mauni Amavasya celebrations, which had drawn millions of devotees. PM Modi urged immediate relief measures, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah also assured the UP government of full support from the Centre.

Stampede-like situation at Sangam nose

According to Special Executive Officer Kumbh Mela Authority Akanksha Rana, a barrier collapse at Sangam Nose led to a chaotic rush, resulting in multiple injuries. "Some people have been injured in the incident, who are undergoing treatment. No one is serious," she stated. However, sources speaking on condition of anonymity reported that at least 15 bodies had been brought to the hospital. Authorities have urged devotees to retreat from the Triveni Sangam as rescue operations continue.

Akhadas cancel ritual bathing following tragedy

In response to the incident, Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Ravindra Puri announced the cancellation of the sacred Mauni Amavasya bathing rituals. "You would have seen what happened in the morning, and that’s why we have decided to call off the 'snan' on Mauni Amavasya," he stated. Mahant Hari Giri, general secretary of the Akhara Parishad and patron of Juna Akhara, also appealed to devotees to bathe in the Ganga wherever they are and return home safely.

Massive crowds overwhelm the administration

The stampede comes amid an overwhelming surge of devotees in Prayagraj. On Tuesday, nearly five crore people had already gathered in anticipation of the auspicious bathing rituals, and the UP government estimated that the number would rise to 10 crore on Wednesday. The administration is now struggling to control the massive influx and ensure the safety of pilgrims.
