A heartbreaking incident occurred in the Rahimabad area of Sarojini Nagar, where two children tragically drowned while bathing in a pit formed by illegal mining activities. The victims, 15-year-old Durgesh from Vishnunagar and 13-year-old Manas from Murali Vihar, went missing on Thursday evening after they and a friend decided to take a dip following their coaching classes.

According to the sources, the incident unfolded around 5:30 PM when the three boys entered the water-filled pit. While one boy managed to swim to safety, Durgesh and Manas were swept away. Eyewitnesses reported that as the situation became dire, the friend ran to alert the families. Local residents quickly informed the police, who arrived at the scene and initiated a search operation with the help of divers.

Recovery efforts and community outrage

Despite the swift response, the bodies of Durgesh and Manas were recovered only late that night after an exhaustive search. Their belongings, including a bag, clothes, and a bicycle, were found near the pit, underscoring the tragic turn of events.

Meanwhile, the locals expressed outrage, alleging that the pit was a result of illegal mining and criticized authorities for failing to take action to prevent such dangerous conditions. The police, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and diving teams, worked through the night as family members anxiously awaited news.

This tragedy has ignited anger among residents, highlighting a lack of safety measures around the pond. Locals voiced their frustration at the absence of barriers or warnings, which could have potentially prevented this disaster.

As investigations into the illegal mining practices continue, this incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by unregulated activities and the urgent need for community safety measures. The families of the victims are left to mourn the loss of their young lives, while the community demands accountability and changes to ensure such a tragedy does not happen again.
