New Delhi: A shocking incident of revenge took place in Lucknow, where a man attempted to crush his ex-wife and six others by ramming a pickup truck into their SUV. The attack left all seven people injured, including the woman, who claims her former husband had been harassing her for over a year. Despite multiple complaints filed with the police, no action was taken until the attack occurred, raising questions about police inaction.

Build-up to the attack

The victim, identified as Soni, has accused her ex-husband, Vinay Kumar Dwivedi, of plotting the attack. According to Soni, she separated from Vinay last year and married her lover, Mahendra. Since her remarriage, Vinay allegedly began harassing her, following her around, and threatening to ruin her life. “He would stop me on the way, harass me, and I filed nine complaints at the police station, but no action was taken,” said Soni.

The victim stated that Vinay’s harassment continued to escalate, leading him to plan the attempted murder. “If the police had acted on my complaints, he wouldn’t have had the courage to try and kill me,” she added, visibly shaken.

Attack leaves seven injured

The attack took place on Monday when Soni, her husband Mahendra, and several family members were traveling in an SUV. Vinay allegedly chased them down in a pickup truck and rammed it into their vehicle, injuring all seven occupants. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but the victims suffered significant injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Soni blames her ex-husband entirely for the attack and has called for stricter police action. “Vinay had been trying to defame me for months, constantly telling people he would destroy my life. If anything happens to me, Vinay will be responsible,” she declared.

Police response under scrutiny

The incident has sparked outrage as it highlights the lack of timely police intervention. According to the victim's family, local police initially dismissed the incident as an accident. However, as the case gained attention, Rahimabad Station Officer (SO) Anubhav Singh arrested Vinay Kumar Dwivedi on charges of attempted murder. “The police failed to act despite nine complaints. Only when things escalated did they take the matter seriously,” said a family member.

Vinay is currently in custody, undergoing interrogation, while the injured victims continue to receive medical treatment. The case has raised concerns over the inefficacy of law enforcement in handling domestic harassment and its potentially deadly consequences.

Nine unanswered complaints

Soni’s account of her harrowing experience paints a troubling picture of negligence. “I filed complaints nine times, and each time, the police did nothing. If they had acted, this would never have happened,” she reiterated. The case highlights the urgent need for a more proactive response from authorities to prevent such incidents of domestic harassment from escalating into violence.
