A recent viral video from West Bengal has captured widespread attention, showcasing an unusual event where a professor married his student inside a classroom. The incident, which occurred in Harinaghatta Technology College, located about 150 kilometers from Kolkata, has taken social media by storm. The college, affiliated with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), is now at the center of this controversial affair.
The viral video shows Professor Payal Banerjee, dressed in traditional bridal attire, exchanging garlands and applying turmeric to her student in accordance with Hindu marriage rituals. In another clip, the couple is seen performing the seven sacred steps around a lit candle, a substitute for the holy fire in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony. The student is also seen receiving sindoor (vermilion) in her hair and a rose from the professor, further cementing the appearance of a wedding.

Despite the seemingly legitimate nature of the ceremony, both the professor and the student have reportedly denied that this was an actual marriage. According to them, it was a part of an academic exercise, designed for internal purposes only. The incident has raised several eyebrows, as it appears to blur the lines between professional and personal boundaries.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The professor has been sent on leave while a three-member panel is being formed to examine the matter further. A university official clarified that "without proper investigation, we cannot take any strict action." However, the viral videos have fueled speculation and controversy across social media platforms, prompting a strong public response.
A university letterhead, signed by both the professor and the student, also surfaced online, where they declared each other as life partners, accompanied by three witnesses on both sides.
This incident has sparked a debate on the ethical boundaries in academic environments and has garnered attention nationwide. Whether this was a harmless academic exercise or something more personal remains to be seen as the investigation unfolds.
