In a significant breakthrough, Varanasi Police apprehended 15 women involved in stealing gold chains and mangalsutras from devotees attending the Shiv Mahapuran Katha by renowned orator Pradeep Mishra. The arrests were made at the Katha venue in Domri. Authorities recovered two gold chains and nine mangalsutras worth an estimated ₹10 lakh from the accused women.

Caught through CCTV surveillance

The police relied on CCTV footage to identify and apprehend the suspects. The accused women, hailing from various districts, operated as a coordinated gang, specifically targeting devotees at the spiritual event.

The women arrested include Jyoti, Shanti, Rajkumari, and Meena from Rehari Patraiya in Jaunpur district; Manisha and Kajal from Baraya village in Chandauli’s Alinagar; Anita and Reena from Saidpur Bhitri in Ghazipur; Reema and Manita from Jawnipura; Gyanmati and Lakshmi from Ekma in Maharajganj district; Sunita from Jagatpur in Gorakhpur; another Sunita from Jagatpur in Sant Kabir Nagar; Akku from Amraha; and Durga from Bihia village in Ara district, Bihar. All the suspects have been sent to jail following their arrests.

This gang has been operating by blending in with the crowd at large gatherings, making it difficult to detect their activities until now. The timely intervention by the police has brought relief to devotees and highlights the importance of heightened security at such public events.
